"The Ghost of Mary"

EII026 - "The Ghost of Mary"

Following the 2005 "Things that go bump in the night" article in the Waltham Forest Guardian, a reader contacted us and gave us some more information regarding the "ghost of Mary" which is rumoured to visit the pub.

The ghost of Mary?

He told us "The 'ghost' images are in the central window just left of the ladders, this is said to be the 'ghost' called Mary.

As the story goes, she was on her wedding night when she perished with her new husband William Darwin (or Darlin) and the image is said to be her in her wedding dress. This picture was taken on the first day of the 3 day fire when the top of the left building had already being burned out. One local fire fighter was also killed in the blaze which is said to have started in the bridal suite.

The second 'ghost' image is to the far left, in the bay window. To the best of my knowledge there is no story attached to this image.

I myself worked and lived there for 2 years, in that time I had no strange experiences but many of my staff did and it is true that one member left after seeing a figure (of unknown gender) sat at the base of their bed on 2 seperate occasions."
